How to Prepare for Your
Commercial Drivers License

#1. You must have a D.O.T. physical
This can be provided by your doctor.

Or we recommend:   Concentra Medical Centers
                                           2620 E. Prospect Rd.
                                           Ft. Collins. CO.
                                           (970) 221-5811

             The cost is $62

#2.   Go to the Dept. of Motor Vehicles office and take the
written tests for the license class you wish to obtain

After passing these tests; get a CDL Permit (cost  $14)

Study sections #11 - #12 - #13 of the CDL Drivers Manual (Driving Skills Test).  This section helps prepare drivers for the skills tests, which will be performed on our site with a CDL tester.

There is a new CDL Manual (white book) out now.
The Pre-Trip inspection is listed in Section #11 rather than #10 of the old (red) book.
Section #12 of this new manual covers maneuvering.
Section #13 covers what we are looking for during the Road Test.

Carefully study this manual prior to taking your test.

#3.   Practice your driving skills

#4.   SET UP AN APPOINTMENT AT A LOCAL TEST SITE TO
         COMPLETE YOUR 'SKILLS TEST'

CDL Test Fee =
$175

(970) 690-8846

You Should Also Be Aware...

There are three parts to the CDL test:

bullet
Vehicle Inspection, or Pre-Trip
bullet
Basic Control Skill Tests
bullet
Road Test

The test itself is progressive - you must pass each of the above listed parts in the order they are listed before moving on to the next test.
(
EXAMPLE - you must pass the 'Pre-Trip Test' in order to move on the the 'Basic Control Skill Test'
)

Should you fail at any point, you must start at the beginning again.
The CDL Test is $175 - each time you take the test.

Roy Hansen & Associates is committed to teaching clients the skills necessary to pass these tests, so you won't suffer costly retakes.

Effective March 20, 2009
“Double Clutching” mandate

If you are operating a non-synchronized transmission such as a 9, 10, 13, 15 or 18 speed, you MUST be able to perform 'double clutch' when up / down shifting.

There are 42 points that rate your ability to shift appropriately. During the road test portion of the CDL test you may ONLY accumulate 25 points total.  Improper shifting alone can cause Test Failure if you can not perform this function properly each and every time you shift.

Here are 3 options:

1. You can bring an automatic transmission vehicle to take your test with. The towing unit must be over 26,001 # and the trailer must be over 10,001 # for a full Class “A” license test with Air Brakes.

2. We can teach you how to double clutch, however, we can’t do this the same day as the test and it does take some time to master.
Cost $
75 per hour.

3. You can hook your trailer to our Automatic Transmission tractor and take the test.  Not having to worry about the gears or clutch and you can concentrate on good driving behavior - this is less expensive than failing the test and repeating it.

Retest fee is $175 and you MUST start with the Pre-Trip Inspection again.

Tractor rental is $200 with your trailer
Tractor rental with our trailer is $
225

By law, we MUST give Compliance 3 day notice prior to taking your test.
This rule also applies if retesting is required.

MORE DARN RULES:

Class “B” same rules apply.  If you need to use an automatic we have a bus available - however, you must have a “Passenger” endorsement on your permit.  This will require you to go to DMV and take the “Passenger” test and add that endorsement to your permit.  We cannot let you drive the bus w/o this endorsement.

Also, if you are driving a tanker for the test you are taking, you MUST have a tank endorsement on your permit.

Again the 3 day scheduling delay still applies.

EFFECTIVE AUGUST 1, 2004:

DUE TO NEW RULES AND REGULATIONS WE ARE NO LONGER ABLE TO PROVIDE A PICK-UP AND RETURN SERVICE FOR DRIVER APPLICANTS AND/OR VEHICLES FROM REMOTE LOCATIONS TO THE TEST SITE.

DRIVER APPLICANTS MUST ARRIVE WITH ANOTHER LICENSED DRIVER (AND QUALIFIED VEHICLE IF APPLICABLE) TO THE TESTING SITE TO HAVE THE CDL TEST ADMINISTERED.
